Martian Successor Nadesico: The Blank of 3 Years -- English translation
Version 1.0.2-beta (2026-10-28)
================================================================================

Original Japanese release: Sega, 1998, Sega Saturn.

ABOUT
-----

An English translation of Martian Successor Nadesico: The Blank of 3 Years
(Kidou Senkan Nadesico), a Sega Saturn adventure game released only in Japan, on
two discs. You read the story page by page, answer its choices and name your own
character. This is a free fan translation, made independently: no other team's
patches, scripts or tools were used. The patches contain no game data; you apply
each one to your own copy of its Japanese disc.

WHAT YOU NEED -- DISC 1
-----------------------

You need your own copy of each Japanese disc, as a cue sheet with its BIN tracks
(Redump set names "Kidou Senkan Nadesico - The Blank of 3 Years (Japan) (Disc
1)" and "(Disc 2)"). Each patch applies to track 1 of its disc only.

HOW TO PATCH (EACH DISC)
------------------------

  1. Keep the whole disc together: the cue sheet and every BIN track.
  2. Apply the .bps for that disc (_disc1 or _disc2) to its track 1 file,
"Kidou Senkan Nadesico - The Blank of 3 Years (Japan) (Disc N) (Track
1).bin", with Flips (Floating IPS), RomPatcher.js (runs in a web browser)
or beat. Leave the other track(s) as they are.
  3. Give the patched file the SAME name as the original track ("Kidou Senkan
Nadesico - The Blank of 3 Years (Japan) (Disc N) (Track 1).bin"), in the
same folder as the cue sheet, so the cue still finds it. Keep a backup of
the original track somewhere else. (N is the disc number, 1 or 2.)
  4. Load the cue sheet in your emulator. Do not convert the patched disc to
another format before checking that it boots.
  5. Disc 2 continues from the save that disc 1 makes when it asks for the
     disc change.

Disc 1 -- the patched track 1 should match:

  Size 523,235,328 bytes

STATUS
------

Beta. All the game's text is translated: the story on both discs, its choices
and quizzes, the name entry (with an English keyboard), the menus, the save and
load screens, the options screen and the staff credits. The story text is set in
the game's own lettering, spaced for English. The lettering drawn into the
pictures is redrawn in English (the title cards, the signs, the name plates, the
options buttons and the loading screen). The opening song has English subtitles,
and so do the spoken lines the game plays with no text on screen. What was
checked on screen: a route from power-on through the opening movie, the
prologue, the name entry, the first story scenes and the first choice, saving
and loading, the options screen and the change to disc 2, which continues from
the disc 1 save. Every story page of the game was also opened one by one on the
patched discs and every text window measured, and every subtitle was checked on
screen.

KNOWN ISSUES
------------

  - Short reactions (laughs, gasps, sighs and one-word interjections) are spoken
in Japanese without subtitles, on purpose: 61 on disc 1 and 36 on disc 2.
  - The opening song is subtitled when the movie plays on disc 1; disc 2's copy
of the movie plays without subtitles.
  - Some lettering drawn into the pictures is kept as drawn, on purpose: brush
lettering on shop curtains, lanterns and emblems that the picture already
explains, the Gekiganger III trading cards and poster, and background
lettering too small to read on screen.
  - The bonus skit on each disc's music track plays only in a CD player, never
in the game, and is not subtitled.
  - Nothing after the first hours of each disc has been played through by a
tester. Please report anything that looks wrong, with a screenshot and which
    disc you were on.

CHANGELOG
---------

  Disc 1 fix (2026-10-28)
    - Disc 1: the title screen's trailer no longer flickers to a stray picture
      when a subtitle line changes.
    - Disc 2 is unchanged; its 1.0.0-beta patch is included again.

  Disc 1 update (2026-10-28)
    - Disc 1: skipping the opening movie quickly no longer leaves the game stuck
in the music before the title screen on some emulators.
    - Disc 1: the trailer the title screen plays when left alone now has English
      subtitles.
    - Disc 2 is unchanged; its 1.0.0-beta patch is included again.

  First release (2026-10-28)
    - First public beta: the whole game in English on both discs, with English
subtitles for the opening song and for the spoken lines that have no text
      on screen.
