Tengai Makyou: The Apocalypse IV -- English translation
Version 1.0.5-beta (2026-10-22)
================================================================================

Original Japanese release: Hudson Soft / Red Company, 1997, Sega Saturn.

ABOUT
-----

An English translation of Tengai Makyou: The Apocalypse IV (Daiyon no
Mokushiroku), a Sega Saturn role-playing game released only in Japan, on two
discs. This is a free fan translation, made independently: no other team's
patches, scripts or tools were used. The patch contains no game data; you apply
it to your own copy of each Japanese disc.

TWO DISCS
---------

This game has two discs. Patch each disc with its OWN patch file; they are not
interchangeable. Both patches are in this zip:

  TengaiMakyouIV_EN_v1.0.5-beta_disc1.bps  -> Disc 1
  TengaiMakyouIV_EN_v1.0.5-beta_disc2.bps  -> Disc 2

WHAT YOU NEED -- DISC 1
----------------------

You need your own copy of each Japanese disc, as a cue sheet with its BIN tracks
(Redump set names "Tengai Makyou - Daiyon no Mokushiroku - The Apocalypse IV
(Japan) (Disc 1)" and "(Disc 2)"). Each patch applies to track 1 of its disc
only.

    (Disc 2).cue

HOW TO PATCH (EACH DISC)
------------------------

  1. Keep the whole disc together: the cue sheet and every BIN track.
  2. Apply the .bps for that disc to the track 1 file, "Tengai Makyou
     - Daiyon no Mokushiroku - The Apocalypse IV (Japan) (Disc 1) (Track
1).bin", with Flips (Floating IPS), RomPatcher.js (runs in a web browser)
or beat. Leave the other track(s) as they are.
  3. Give the patched file the SAME name as the original track ("Tengai Makyou -
Daiyon no Mokushiroku - The Apocalypse IV (Japan) (Disc 1) (Track 1).bin"),
in the same folder as the cue sheet, so the cue still finds it. Keep a
backup of the original track somewhere else.
  4. Load the cue sheet in your emulator. Do not convert the patched disc to
another format before checking that it boots.

Disc 1 -- the patched track 1 should match:

  Size 653,917,152 bytes
  CRC32 3AE30756
  MD5 0e61c948d0bb3831f486f2c0eb1c0586
  SHA-1 38233d92f96ce0435dde8f514802cb698edfd18d

  Patch file TengaiMakyouIV_EN_v1.0.5-beta_disc1.bps (8,586,249 bytes)
  Patch SHA-1 6fb4b8c6a938bf418c238c7f968faabe64312d9e

Disc 2 -- the patched track 1 should match:

  Size 662,984,112 bytes
  CRC32 542216AA
  MD5 fc08df48746570de668811990874f983
  SHA-1 cc52a3222d5feeb617ff820c0ca280df1e0a5ffc

  Patch file TengaiMakyouIV_EN_v1.0.5-beta_disc2.bps (10,652,957 bytes)
  Patch SHA-1 84819cf9fd359ff409e4be198417b1b76f89de94

Each disc is patched and loaded on its own, through its own cue sheet. When
the game asks for disc 2, switch to it in your emulator's disc menu.

STATUS
------

Beta. The story, the menus, the battles, the status screens, the shops and
minigames, the credits and the staff roll are translated; a few known lines are
still Japanese (see Known issues). The picture lettering is redrawn in English
(name plates, name cards, chapter cards and tab labels), the voiced movies have
English subtitles, and so do 141 voiced story lines that the game plays with no
text on screen. The title screen is left as the original Japanese art on
purpose. What was checked on screen: a route from power-on through the opening,
a field menu, a battle, the status screen, the disc change, the ending and the
staff roll, and every subtitle; the rest was checked by reading each text back
from the running game, not by playing through. Every shop was opened and checked
on screen against the Japanese original, and so was the jigsaw puzzle, with
every piece of all three boards.

KNOWN ISSUES
------------

  - Battle cries and shouts are spoken in Japanese without subtitles, on purpose
(about 330 clips). Voice clips that can only be heard from sound tests are
    not subtitled either.
  - About 80 other voiced lines and 8 voiced movies have no subtitles, because
the two speech checks could not agree on what is said, or only one of them
could hear it. A wrong subtitle is worse than none, so they are left as the
original plays them and listed for a human listen.
  - Some menu and help lines use compact wording to fit the game's fixed boxes,
for example "Guard" for the defense stat in the small stat label.
  - A few lines are known to still show in Japanese: the message when a party
member recovers from a cold, the description of one item (the Imuraya pizza
bun), a remark that the thunder god is missing, a message that a party
member cannot move and a second copy of two item names. They will be
    translated in the next version.
  - A few developer-only and error screens (the hidden debug menus, disc and
drive error text) stay in Japanese. They are not part of normal play.
  - Nothing after the first hours of each disc has been played through by a
tester. Please report anything that looks wrong, with a screenshot and which
    disc you were on.

CHANGELOG
---------

  v1.0.5-beta (2026-10-22)
    - Fixed a freeze on disc 1: after using the Eagle Wings in Seattle, the
flight to Yellowstone ended on a black screen and the game stopped there.
Four bytes the scene relies on had been overwritten by the English; they
are now left exactly as the original has them, here and in 26 other lines
that start the same way, on both discs.
    - The empty stretch between the game data and the music track is kept as on
the original discs (1.0.4 filled it). Some real Saturn drives are
      sensitive to this.
    - A huge thank-you to blodia20 on RetroGameTalk, who played more than three
hours in, found the Yellowstone freeze and described exactly where it
happened. That report is what made this version possible. We're really
looking forward to the rest of your playthrough, blodia20, and if you'd
like to reach out (phil@tttships.co), we would love to talk about the
      game.
  v1.0.4-beta (2026-10-18)
    - The world map's controls help (move, board or get off, fire the cannon) is
in English. It was missed in earlier versions and showed in Japanese.
    - The fortune-cookie stall's thank-you line is in English, and the
      party-name list shows "Ace" correctly.
    - Leaving a shop with the B button and opening Items no longer shows part of
the shopkeeper's next line above the item box.
    - The messages shown while changing discs (CD door open, wrong disc) are
shown in full; in earlier versions only their last word appeared.
  v1.0.3-beta (2026-10-17)
    - Fixed a freeze on disc 2: talking to Dorothy at Chris's Shop locked up the
game in 1.0.2. The English greeting ran to a second page, which that
shop's message window cannot handle; both greetings in the shop now fit
one page, as the Japanese does.
    - Every shop in the game was opened and checked on screen against the
Japanese original: greetings, item lists and descriptions, buying, selling
      and farewells.

  Older versions: see CHANGELOG.txt.
