A fan translation of Meremanoid, a PlayStation role-playing game released only in Japan. It is set in MERE, an undersea world of women, and follows Ardin and his companions through its cities, ruins and wars. It is free and non-commercial. The patch contains no game data: you apply it to your own copy of the Japanese disc. This is a beta; see Known issues below.

01Changes

1.0.0-beta: what is translated

  • All the game's text: the story, the menus, items and their descriptions, battles, shops and inns, the save screens and the memory card title.
  • The dialogue is set in a new serif typeface drawn for the game.
  • The painted lettering is redrawn in English: chapter cards, map and town names, the world map and the battle buttons.
  • The attract movie has English subtitles.

05How to apply
  1. Start from the Redump dump of the Japanese disc: Meremanoid (Japan).cue and Meremanoid (Japan).bin, matching the checksums above.
  2. Apply the .bps to Meremanoid (Japan).bin with Flips, RomPatcher.js (in a browser) or beat. BPS checks the source checksum, so a patcher that rejects the file means the dump differs.
  3. Give the patched file the same name as the original BIN, beside the cue sheet, and load the cue sheet in the emulator. Do not convert the patched disc to another format before checking that it boots.

Tested on. Beetle PSX (Mednafen) with the real Japanese SCPH-5500 BIOS, played by an automated walk of 49 captures from power-on through the opening, the first village, the field menu and a first battle. It has not been tried on other emulators or on real hardware.

06Known issues
  • This is a beta. Two of the project's release checks were waived for it, by decision of the project lead: most of the redrawn painted art (chapter cards, map names, the world map) was checked from the disc but not seen on screen in play, and the text beyond the opening was checked by reading it back from the patched disc, not by playing through.
  • A few small pieces of painted art keep their Japanese on purpose: the katakana title under the logo (the logo above it already reads Meremanoid) and four tiny glyphs on a cloth banner, too small to reletter without inventing text.
  • The attract movie keeps its burned-in Japanese subtitles; the English is drawn above them.
  • Nothing after the opening hours has been played through by a tester.
