A fan translation of Tengai Makyou: Daiyon no Mokushiroku (天外魔境 第四の黙示録, Hudson Soft / Red Company, 1997), a role-playing game released only in Japan on two discs. Rizing and a party of young heroes cross a late-1800s America where the Fire Clan, a demon cult and the Dark Temple fight over the Fire of Eden, with town and field exploration, turn-based battles, shops, minigames and full-motion movies.
Story dialogue, menus, battles, status screens, shops and minigames, the credits and the staff roll are translated; a few known lines are still Japanese (see Known issues). The picture lettering is redrawn in English (name plates, name cards, chapter cards and tab labels), the voiced movies have English subtitles, and so do 141 voiced story lines the game plays with no text on screen. The title screen is left as the original Japanese art on purpose. Free and non-commercial. The patches contain no game data: you apply each to your own copy of the matching Japanese disc.
What's new in 1.0.5
- Fixed a freeze on disc 1: after using the Eagle Wings in Seattle, the flight to Yellowstone ended on a black screen and the game stopped there. Four bytes the scene relies on had been overwritten by the English; they are now left exactly as the original has them, here and in 26 other lines that start the same way, on both discs.
- The empty stretch between the game data and the music track is kept as on the original discs (1.0.4 filled it). Some real Saturn drives are sensitive to this.
- A huge thank-you to blodia20 on RetroGameTalk, who played more than three hours in, found the Yellowstone freeze and described exactly where it happened. That report is what made this version possible. We're really looking forward to the rest of your playthrough, blodia20, and if you'd like to reach out (phil@tttships.co), we would love to talk about the game.
New in 1.0.4
- The world map's controls help (move, board or get off, fire the cannon) is in English. It was missed in earlier versions and showed in Japanese.
- The fortune-cookie stall's thank-you line is in English, and the party-name list shows "Ace" correctly.
- Leaving a shop with the B button and opening Items no longer shows part of the shopkeeper's next line above the item box.
- The messages shown while changing discs (CD door open, wrong disc) are shown in full; in earlier versions only their last word appeared.
New in 1.0.3
- Fixed a freeze on disc 2: talking to Dorothy at Chris's Shop locked up the game in 1.0.2. The English greeting ran to a second page, which that shop's message window cannot handle; both greetings in the shop now fit one page, as the Japanese does.
- Every shop in the game was opened and checked on screen against the Japanese original: greetings, item lists and descriptions, buying, selling and farewells.
New in 1.0.2
- The minigames are now in English. The prize drum's board (Top, 1st to 5th, turns left), the sumo referee's calls (HAKKEYOI!, NOKOTTA!!, WIN, LOSE, THIS BOUT), the robot fight's title (GEISHAROBO vs KINGMANTO) and the stock market's legend and chart labels were Japanese pictures; they are redrawn in English in the original style.
- The stock market's news ticker shows the news in English. In 1.0 it showed scrambled pixels.
- Roulette shows your money correctly ($999999). In 1.0 the amount showed scrambled characters.
- Saving in some areas wrote a Japanese save name. All saves now read "Rizing" and the level, like the rest.
- Blackjack's bet line, poker's money label and roulette's end-of-betting label are in English. So are the second copies of some lines the game keeps in more than one place: the item menu's "Use it on whom?" and "All", a few place names and the CD read error.
1.0.1 also fixed Yes/No questions covered by the choice and subtitles that revealed hidden characters. Patch your original Japanese discs with the 1.0.5 patches. They do not apply on top of an earlier version.

Each disc has its own patch. They are not interchangeable.

- Use your own dump of each disc as
.bin/.cue(two tracks each) matching the checksums above. - Apply each
.bpsto Track 1 of its own disc with Flips, RomPatcher.js or beat. A BPS patcher checks the source, so if it refuses, your dump differs. - Give each patched file the same name as the original Track 1, next to its
.cueand Track 2, so the.cuestill finds it. - Load disc 1's
.cuein Mednafen / Beetle Saturn, or play on hardware. When the game asks for disc 2, switch to it in the emulator's disc menu.
- Battle cries and shouts are spoken in Japanese without subtitles, on purpose (about 330 clips). Voice clips heard only from sound tests are not subtitled either.
- About 80 other voiced lines and 8 voiced movies have no subtitles, because the two speech checks could not agree on what is said, or only one could hear it. They are listed for a human listen.
- Some menu and help lines use compact wording to fit the game's fixed boxes, for example "Guard" for the defense stat in the small stat label.
- A few lines are known to still show in Japanese: the message when a party member recovers from a cold, the description of one item (the Imuraya pizza bun), a remark that the thunder god is missing, a message that a party member cannot move and a second copy of two item names. They will be translated in the next version.
- A few developer-only and error screens (the hidden debug menus, disc and drive error text) stay in Japanese. They are not part of normal play.
- Checked on screen: a route from power-on through the opening, a field menu, a battle, the status screen, the disc change, the ending and the staff roll, and every subtitle. The rest was checked by reading each text back from the running game, not by playing through. Every shop was checked on screen. Each minigame's opening screens were checked on screen, but no minigame has been played through. The jigsaw puzzle was checked on screen with every piece: all three boards (red, blue, yellow) match the Japanese original exactly.
E-mail phil@tttships.co with the version (1.0.5-beta), which disc, what you were doing, a screenshot, and a save state if you can.
