A fan translation of Terra Phantastica (テラ ファンタスティカ, SEGA, 1996), a turn-based tactical RPG in the Fire Emblem / Shining Force line. You lead a company across grid battles, with a world map between chapters, State Council scenes, spoken dialogue and five voiced movies.

Translated: story dialogue, council and choice scenes, battle and tactics menus, unit status and equipment, the world map, save and load, options, and chapter and stage titles. The lettering in 25 picture files has been redrawn in English in the style of the originals, and the five voiced movies have English subtitles. Free and non-commercial. The patch contains no game data: you apply it to your own copy of the Japanese disc.

01Changes

What's new in 1.1.2-beta

  • Fixed a hang on a real Saturn: loading a saved game could stop forever on NOW LOADING. The patch had moved one of the files the game reads while loading a save to the far end of the disc, and filled the short gap the original leaves before the music track. Emulators did not mind, but a real drive did. Every file that still fits now stays where the Japanese disc keeps it, and the gap is back.
  • With a backup memory cartridge, the save-slot prompt ran past the edge of its window. It now clears the previous prompt first.
  • Our heartfelt thanks to rikkerdaddy, who found this bug. Every emulator we test on loaded the save without a hitch, so without him we truly could not have found it, let alone fixed it. He played on his own Saturn, reported the hang in careful detail, and burned and tested the fix on his console, which is the only way it could have been proven. Everyone playing on real hardware owes this version to him.

In 1.1.1-beta

  • Fixed a glitch reported from a phone Saturn emulator: in the tutorial battle, the banner screen that opens a clash could show garbled flags and a garbled background. The redrawn banner pictures are now packed so the game reads exactly as much from the disc as it does for the Japanese pictures. The pictures themselves are unchanged. Thanks to Game Daddy, whose livestream of the game found this bug.

In 1.1.0-beta

  • The heroine's default name is now Diene. It was Dine, which read like the verb. You can still give her any name you like at the start.
  • The Emperor's Gift Sword is now called the Sword of Imperial Favor.
  • Punctuation is consistent: "?!" everywhere, and periods and commas inside quotation marks.
  • A few lines in the opening chapters read more naturally; the State Council's votes now end with "The ayes have it." Gebobo's cries are in English.

05How to apply
  1. Use your own dump as .bin/.cue (two tracks) matching the checksums above.
  2. Apply TerraPhantastica_EN_v1.1.2-beta.bps to the Track 1 .bin with Flips, RomPatcher.js or beat. A BPS patcher checks the source, so if it refuses, your dump differs.
  3. Give the patched file the same name as the original Track 1, next to the .cue and Track 2, so the .cue still finds it.
  4. Load the .cue in Mednafen / Beetle Saturn, or play on hardware.
06Known issues
  • Battle cries and spell shouts are spoken in Japanese without subtitles, on purpose. Voice clips that can only be heard from the sound test in Options are not subtitled either.
  • Ten voiced battle lines are still being checked; their subtitles may change.
  • The style of the redrawn picture lettering may still change.
  • The comment the game writes into the Saturn's save memory stays in Japanese. The game never shows it; only the console's memory manager does.
  • The opening, up to the first save, has been checked on screen. Later chapters were checked by reading their text back from the running game, not yet by a full playthrough.
  • 59 battle-effect animation files have not yet been checked frame by frame for Japanese lettering.
